Three years after the memorable Cup final in Valencia, Catalans and Basques will once again meet in the King’s Cup final

It will be the seventh time both teams will face off against each other in the championship match of the Cup
Athletic Club and FC Barcelona will meet for the seventh time in the final of the King’s Cup. Barça is the team with the most Cup titles, with 25, and Athletic Club is second with 23.

The first title of the treble

It was May 13th, 2009. Barça was close to claiming the Liga crown and the team had booked a spot in the finals of the Champions League and the Cup. It was the Cup final, at Mestalla, when Barça started its historic treble bid. Athletic Club, their first final in 24 years, scored the first goal through Toquero. But Barça fought back to claim the title with fantastic football and goals from Toure, Messi, Bojan and Xavi. The Liga and the Champions League followed suit soon there after.

The worst memory

Of the six finals that Barça and Athletic Club have played, the worst was in the 1984 final at the Santiago Bernabeu. It was a match to forget, because of the loss -Endika scored the winning goal- and because of the behaviour between the two sides after the match. It was the last match for manager Menotti and player Diego Armando Maradona as Azulgranas.

A classic

Much before 1984, however, both the teams dominated the Cup and regularly met in the final. Barça won in 1953 (2-1), 1942 (4-3), and 1920 (2-0), while Los Leones won in 1932 (0-1). In total, of the six finals played, four have been won by Barça and two by Athletic Club.

Barça v Valencia: Did you know...

Barça have knocked out Valencia in 9 out of 15 cup meetings, although Valencia have gone through the last two times
There is plenty of trivia surrounding the meeting tonight between Barça and Valencia in the cup semi final second leg. Here is a selection:
- Barça have knocked out Valencia in 9 out of 15 cup meetings, although Valencia have gone through the last two times
- Valencia beat Barcelona to get to the final in 2007/08 and to the semi finals in the 1998/99 season
- They have played five times in the semi finals, Barça have gone through three times and Valencia twice
- In Barcelona and Valencia's five semi final meetings, the winners have always gone on to take the cup title
- Of the times Barça have drawn 1-1 in the away first leg of a semi final, they have eventually qualified five times out of seven. This situation has never arisen in a cup tie where Valencia has been the opposition
- FC Barcelona have scored three goals against Valencia so far this season. Pedro and Cesc scored in the league and Puyol in the cup
- This season the teams have drawn both times they have met, 2-2 in the league and 1-1 in the cup
- Guardiola made five changes to his team for those matches. Only Cesc, Puyol, Messi, Mascherano, Busquets and Abidal started both in the league and the cup
- Unai Emery has come to the Camp Nou four times, once as manager of Almeria and three times with Valencia, and has always lost
- In these four games against Emery, FC Barcelona have scored eleven goals and only conceded one
- The last time Valencia came to the Camp Nou was early last season, when FC Barcelona won 2-1 thanks to goals from Iniesta and Puyol, and that was after going 1-0 down early on

Cesc Fabregas and Xavi were on target for Barcelona as they disposed of 10-man Valencia to advance to the Copa del Rey final on Wednesday night.
There was all to play for with the tie finely balanced at 1-1 heading into tonight's second leg at the Nou Camp, and the hosts needed only 16 minutes to take the lead through a neat finish from Fabregas.
Sofiane Feghouli was sent off for the visitors in the 76th minute for a second bookable offence and soon after Xavi eased any Barca nerves by grabbing his side's second goal.
Barca will face Athletic Bilbao in the final after the Basque club completed an 8-3 aggregate win over Mirandes last night.

Early chances

Valencia had a couple of early sights of goal this evening but were unable to work Jose Pinto in the Barca goal.
Victor Ruiz failed to connect in the six-yard box in the third minute and then Feghouli lashed in a left-footed shot which whistled narrowly past the top-left corner.
The hosts went ahead on the quarter-hour mark, Fabregas dinking over Diego Alves with the outside of his right boot following a fine pass from Lionel Messi.
Barca were beginning to gain a foothold as the game wore on, although Los Che remained a threat on the counter-attack.
Alves prevented Barca from going two up in the 18th minute, producing a brilliant save to keep out Messi after the Argentina forward had burst through on goal.
Alexis Sanchez had another blast deflected wide in the 27th minute and Fabregas saw another drive stopped by Alves three minutes later as Pep Guardiola's side continued to push forward.
A last-gasp tackle from Gerard Pique denied Jonas a shooting opportunity nine minutes before the break when the Valencia forward looked to have found space.
Valencia were almost back on level terms in the opening moments of the second half, but Pinto got out well to block with his legs from Jordi Alba's angled shot.
The ever-lively Messi went within a whisker of extending his side's lead at the other end in the 54th minute after latching onto Isaac Cuenca's slick pass, the Ballon d'Or winner's effort deflected over the bar by Ruiz.
The visitors had a sniff of an equaliser soon after when, with Pinto in no-man's land, Aritz Aduriz sent over a cross but Javier Mascherano cleared the danger.
The action soon returned to the other end, where Messi capitalised on sloppy defending to go close again but his only reward was a corner.
Pinto had to be alert in the 73rd minute to tip a fierce attempt from Jonas over the bar for a corner.
Valencia's cause was not helped by the dismissal of Feghouli 14 minutes from time, the midfielder shown a second yellow card for a stray arm in the face of Carles Puyol.
Advantage
Barca did not take long to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
Messi's superb pass found Sanchez and he laid the ball off for Fabregas to tee up Xavi, who lashed a stunning shot into the roof of the net to put the result beyond doubt.
Messi could have added further gloss to the scoreline when he unleashed a brilliant free-kick in the 85th minute. Alves produced a magnificent right-handed save, but Barca were home and dry.sumber
